Adam married Elizabeth Eichart, who was born in 1735. We do not have an exact date on this marriage but the date was most likely before Adam’s oldest son Anthony was born in 1758 in East Hempfield Twp. Anthony’s birth date was taken from his tombstone in the Keltz Cemetery in Ligonier Twp. where both Adam and his first son Anthony are buried. The fact that Adam named his first son Anthony also is a sign that Anthony was Adam’s father, since it was typical in those days to name the first son after the father’s father. Adam and Elizabeth had 8 children, 3 sons and 5 daughters. All of the children except Anthony were born in Ligonier Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA. Adam was a Conestoga wagon driver and worked and lived in the Lancaster area until the age of 28 when he became a part of the large group of Mennonites and farmers from Lancaster that were asked to use their wagons to haul goods on the Forbes Road to Fort Ligonier in 1758. This was part of the French and Indian War and numerous wagons were needed to supply the large number of British troops who moved into Fort Ligonier in the year of 1758. This army contained around 6,000 soldiers at the peak of the war. Many of the wagon drivers who brought goods to the Fort were given property along the Forbes Trail for their service to Britain and some were asked to move close to the Fort to start farming They were asked to supply fresh food for the troops at both Ligonier and Pittsburgh and as a result many of them moved here early to start farming. We believe Adam moved his family to this area in circa 1761 and moved onto his 1,200 acre Grant of land that was supplied by General Arthur St. Clair. Fort Ligonier was an active fort that required supplies until it was decommissioned from active status in 1766, and we believe Adam and many of his neighbors were bringing supplies to the soldiers at the fort.
